WFS VOLLEYBALL HEAD COACH: NICKO MATA'U

Born & raised in San Francisco, Nicko Mata’u grew up in a sport-oriented family. From a young age, Nicko fell in love with volleyball and knew that this would be a passion of his. His enthusiasm and respect for the game are what he instills in the girls he encounters.
Nicko enters his First Season with International High School. Last year he was an Assistant Coach for The San Francisco City College Lady Rams Volleyball program. Nicko also spent one season at San Mateo High school where he Head Coached Junior Varsity and assisted with Varsity. He also spent one season Head Coaching the Lady Tigers of Terra Nova High school.
When Nicko isn’t coaching High School volleyball, He coaches girls club volleyball. Nicko coached at SF Tremors Volleyball Club where his team qualified for the Girls Junior Olympics two years in a row. Coach has also coached at other clubs such as 1st String VBC and 650 Xtreme VBC.
Growing up, Nicko played four years of Varsity Volleyball at Burton High School in San Francisco and played club for Slainte and Bay-2-Bay. Nicko’s 18-1 Team qualified for the Boys Junior Olympics in the Open division and finished 2nd.
However, his playing experience does not stop here. Nicko was a part of the NCVA High Performance team for three years, played three years at the City College of San Francisco Men's team as a Setter/Opposite Hitter.  Here, he earned himself two Second Team All-Conference finishes and one Honorable mention.
Outside of coaching, Nicko enjoys spending time with his family and friends. Nicko plays volleyball as much as possible, participating in various open gyms, adult leagues, and tournaments. He also loves taking the time to just relax and embrace what life has to offer.
“Coaching is something I’m super passionate about! My Philosophy is to train my girls for every possible situation that they could encounter on the court, but also to teach them about life. Spending 3-4 days a week with our teams, we should also get the girls ready for the real world. Also creating a lasting impression in their lives as well. These are important times in these girls lives and we are fortunate enough to be apart of it. Making and maintaining a lasting relationship is something I strive to achieve with every girl I come across. I just want my girls to love and respect the game of Volleyball as much as I do.”
