Recently, he served as Co-Chair of the Steering committee of the Intergovernmental Pain Research Coordinating Committee (IPRCC), which was charged with identifying priorities for pain research at major federal agencies (NIH, DOD, CDC, FDA, etc). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine and is a fellow of the Royal Society in the United Kingdom. He is presently head of the scientific advisory board of the Facial Pain Research Foundation and contributes to advisory committees for several major pharmaceutical companies developing novel pain therapies.
