French American International School’s Tinker Space is a creative studio for young minds to investigate and create through hands-on activities. The space engages Lower School students in technology and design, offers support and resources for teachers to develop STEM projects for the classroom, and provides students a space to take initiative and be collaborative, curious, and creative.

In March, the Tinker Space served as a recording studio for the Lower School’s first live radio show. The inspiration for the program came from a Web Radio workshop in which Lower School Academic Technology Coordinator Philippe Charpantier and Fourth Grade Teacher Emma Le Pellec participated in Portland, OR in February.

“We realized that it would be pretty easy to set up, that it could include students’ and teachers’ participation across various grade levels, and that it has the potential to inspire creative writing and, of course, develop French oral skills,” said Philippe. “We came back [from the workshop] and began planning a radio show that would include riddles and jingles created and recorded by 2nd and 4th graders, respectively; a school news flash presented by 5th graders; and a presentation of the Student Council by 5th grade representatives.” All content was developed and recorded in French.

While the recording infrastructure was set up by Philippe and Emma, the broadcast was led by students—the radio host and two technicians are in 4th grade. Check out the video and audio recordings, and stay tuned for future broadcasts!

Take Two: In May, the second Web Radio program was recorded in the Tinker Space. It was a truly collaborative effort among 1st, 2nd, 4th & 5th grade classes. Listen to their recording and watch the video to catch a glimpse of the production!

"Research shows that younger children have a superior ability to learn a second language and that bilingual students tend to outperform their monolingual peers."
