12 Students Compete at the Randall Museum Science Fair

Our middle school students have been competing in the Randall Museum Science Fair for 20+ years. In February, every 6th, 7th and 8th grader usesd class time to develop projects from hypothesis to testing to conclusions. Compellingly, many used their personal experiences as a springboard to develop their experiments. Altogether, students worked on an astounding 132 projects, of which nine were chosen by an internal panel of teachers for submission into the Randall Museum Science Fair. On February 28, 12 of our middle students (some of whom worked in pairs) will represent French American, one of 28 schools participating.

Below is a list of competing students and their projects, including excerpts from their submissions. Sixth-grade student Juliana Karp brought home First Prize.


 
First Place Winner at Randall Museum Science Fair: Juliana Karp, 6th: Wired to Resist

"The purpose of my experiment was to determine the effects of increased length and diameter on the resistance of insulated copper wire."

Gertrude Stookey, 6th: Do Singers Talk Like Ballerinas Walk?
"The purpose of my experiment was to show if singers' voices are different from other people's voices who don't sing for a job."


James Emerson & Joshua DeWalt, 6th: Float Your Boat!

"We decided to test water displacement and if more surface area [in boats] is the key to a more supported area."


Matilda Holtz & Eva Krueger, 7th: Which Emulsifier is the Most Efficient?
"Our hypothesis was that Soy Lecithin would be the most efficient emulsifier because it is the lightest, has the strongest hydrophilic head, and the longest carbon tail."


Gabriella Perich, 7th: Is Honey Thicker When Boiled?

"I concluded that boiled honey is thicker than regular honey while cooled at the same temperature."


Alexander Hansmann & Sadiq Bouhamama, 7th: Temperature Differences Between Natural Grass and Artificial Turf
"We are both soccer players, and have frequently played on artificial grass. We both felt like it was hotter on the turf fields than natural grass fields. Now, we want to prove our theory."


Sydney Milner, 8th: Wicking Ability of Different Fabrics
"Since I am a ski racer, and staying warm during exercise is very important, I wanted to test which kinds of clothing fabrics would be best for this purpose."


Alexander Millauer-Hsu, 8th: What Causes the Change in Pitch When You Fill a Water Bottle?
"My experimental setup consisted of a burette mounted above a graduated cylinder, which also had a microphone mounted at its opening."


Katherine Horn, 8th: Varying the Viscosity of Crude Oil

"I wanted to show how the viscosity of oil could be changed using various methods and to discuss what it means when extracting crude oil from the ground."
