 | Grammar and Usage - Offered July 26 - August 13 (9-10AM) Did you know the first thing teachers of any subject notice about their students’ writing is whether it displays a good command of grammar and usage? Yet grammar is also the area of English instruction that in today’s education is most likely to be neglected. Whether you feel you “missed out” on grammar in middle school because it wasn’t thoroughly taught, or you were taught it but just “didn’t get it,” or you’re concerned about doing well on the grammar and usage portion of the SAT, this course is designed to help you. You’ll learn the essential grammatical terms as well as how to avoid the most common mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and usage. Simple, clear explanations and a variety of teaching techniques (including grammar games!) will convince you that grammar need not be a mystery or an exercise in torture. And you’ll get lots of practice, both written and oral, so that when you go back to school in the fall you can feel confident and secure that your writing is clear and grammatically correct. This course is designed to supplement “Literary Analysis and Composition.” It can also be taken separately. No prior study of grammar is required or assumed. | Literary Analysis and Composition Workshop - Offered July 26 - August 13 (10:30 - 11:30AM) This three-week intensive course focuses exclusively on developing the essential skills necessary to write formal, analytic essays about literature. It is this kind of writing that is required in all International High School English courses as well as in the literature courses offered at other highly rigorous, college-preparatory high schools. The course is designed for entering 9th grade students at International who would like a head-start on the kind of writing that will be expected of them in their 9th grade English class as well as subsequently in the IB program. It is equally appropriate for International High School students entering grades 10 and 11 needing to remediate a grade of “2” (D) from one semester of last year or those International students who would simply like more practice writing about literature. Finally, it is also open to any non-International High School students who feel they could benefit from an intensive focus on the fundamentals of analytic writing. Students will be guided through all the steps of the analytic writing process, starting with the “close reading” of a literary text and ending with a completed essay that is thoughtful, well-organized, and well-supported by textual evidence that has been appropriately incorporated into the body. If class is taken. for credit, all writing assignments must be completed in a satisfactory manner. For remediation purposes at International, a grade of 4 (B) or higher makes a semester grade of “2” eligible for conversion into a “3”. The decision whether to change the semester grade will be made by the teacher who originally awarded the “2,” based on the work produced for this course. Class meets one hour per day, Monday - Thursday. Assignments will include close analysis of short literary texts, written exercises designed to develop and structure a persuasive argument, and the production of at least three essays on three different literary texts. Class size is limited to 12 students. Instructor: Kenneth Ralston, Ph.D Cost $750.00 |
